Evaluate how Satisfied you are Right Now
The first thing you need to do is evaluate how satisfied you are with your job. Make sure that you keep a journal that shows the roles that you have with your job and look out for any themes that may be recurrent. What aspects of your job do you like right now? What are you hoping to change? While you are doing this, there are some things that you can do with your job right now that could help you to move on when the time comes for you to make a change.

Assess your Interests
Another thing that you need to try and do is assess all of your interests. You need to look at the roles that you have had some luck with in the past, such as projects, any volunteer work, or anything else. you can then determine if your core values and your skills can be addressed with any new positions you are looking at. There are so many online tools out there that you can use to try and assess your career alternatives, so be mindful of this if you can.

Consider a Different Career
Brainstorm every single idea that you come up with when the time comes for you to research your options. Discussing your core values and also your skills with your friends will also help here. If you are having a hard time coming up with any ideas, then do not be afraid to chat with a career counsellor to see if they can give you some advice. Have a science background? Why not look into joining a clinical research organization.

Get Personal
Find out whatever you can about the fields you are looking at and also do your bit to reach out to any personal contacts who may work there as well. One good way for you to get contacts would be for you to go through sites such as LinkedIn. When you do, you will soon find that it is easier than ever for you to get connected and this can give you the valuable insight you need to know if the career path is the right one for you.

Shadow a Professional
Shadow professionals in various fields and see how they work. You can do this just for a few hours and it is a great way for you to decide if a career is right for you. A lot of companies would be happy to let you do this, not to mention that it gives them a chance to get an exciting new prospect potentially on board.

So changing careers might be scary, but it doesn’t take long to get comfortable when you know your options.
