“Doctor Strange” Is A Marvel: Review

Marvel put time and thought into the newest movie franchise. “Doctor Strange” lives up to all the hype and much more. It is a well done and thoughtful adventure through the life of Doctor Strange. You see him as human, flawed, egotistical, pained and powerful.

The special effects were phenomenal! If you see one movie in IMAX 3D, make it this one. Some of the effects are so realistic they are a bit gut wrenching.  This is an action packed film but not a blood and gore flick. There is some violence but it is story driven and not excessive. The magic is beautiful and well done. Someone put a lot of thought into how they wanted things to look and made the team perform to pretty exacting standards.

Benedict Cumberbatch was the perfect choice for the part of Doctor Strange. He demonstrates a tremendous range in this character. If you are a newbie or diehard fan I think you can find something to like in this choice. He looks great in a cape too…

Tilda Swinton turned out to be a perfect choice for the role of The Ancient One. I know that there was some disappointment and controversy about casting her as a traditionally Asian character. I think they took care of that in the script quite well. They paid homage to the traditional character in a subtle but unmistakable way. Swinton is such an ageless person that this role fits like your most comfortable coat.

You probably remember Chiwetel Ejiofor from his role as Lola in “Kinky Boots”. Well Ejiofor has a new pair of boots. These are magic! Ejiofor plays Mordo, a seasoned sorcerer with an immeasurable allegiance to The Ancient One until everything falls apart. The straw that broke the camel’s back shattered everything.  He played Mordo perfectly and I look forward to more from this character in the future.

Mads Mikkelsen is a villain once again. I love him as a villain whether is pigeonholed to that sort of character or not. Go with your strengths. Mikkelsen plays Kaecilius. You are set to hate him from the start. He betrayed everyone and everything. He is a thief! He is wretched and evil. Or is he the only person that sees the real truth? Your call. Mikkelsen gives Kaecilius life!

Obviously I loved the movie. It is fast paced and wonderfully done. The special effects are pure artistry. The comic relief is often sudden and a breath of fresh air when things are a little too tense. Stan Lee’s cameo is fun although very short. You could almost miss it. This is definitely the best 3D movie I have seen. I will be seeing it again. You should get tickets now! Have fun!
