When we talk about good health, we tend to focus on keeping fit and eating well. The truth is that mental health is as important as physical wellness. We all go through tough times, and when life is challenging, our psychological wellbeing can suffer. If you’re going through a rough patch, here are some survival strategies to employ.
Let your emotions out
We all experience emotional responses. Sometimes, they are positive and we feel ecstatic and elated. Unfortunately, we also go through distress, sadness, anxiety and despair. One of the most important and constructive steps you can take if you’re struggling to manage your emotions and cope with negative thoughts and anxiety is to let those feelings out. You can talk to people you trust, see a therapist or be creative. If you don’t feel ready to open up about how you feel, or you’re not comfortable saying words out loud, writing and activities like painting and drawing can be incredibly cathartic. Exercise can also help you channel emotions like anger and frustration, and it can help you find tranquility if you’re struggling to relax or switch off.
Ask for help
Many of us like to think of ourselves as tough cookies, but occasionally, we all need help. Whether you would benefit from emotional support, practical guidance or expert advice, it’s important to realize that you’re not alone. Dealing with difficult and traumatic life events like losing loved ones, going through a break-up or being diagnosed with an illness can push you to the limits, and often, it’s beneficial to gather information, to ask questions and to start making plans for the future. Bereavement is one of the most draining and distressing things human beings go through. If you’ve lost a friend, partner or family member, don’t hesitate to ask for help. You may be struggling to come to terms with what has happened, and if the circumstances are unclear, you might be seeking closure. If a loved one has been killed in an accident that wasn’t their fault, for example, this can make the grieving process even more complex and difficult. Asking for legal help after a wrongful death can help you find the answers to questions and to process what has happened and seek justice. If you’re going through a break-up, seeing a therapist or a counselor will enable you to share your thoughts, to come to terms with the situation and to think about what happens next.
Understand that nothing is permanent
All of us go through stages where we feel like we’re stuck in a deep hole. If this scenario sounds familiar, always remember that things change and very few things in life are guaranteed. Focus on identifying solutions and working out ways to move closer to the opening of the hole, rather than dwelling on the problem itself or how it occurred. Nobody knows what is around the corner, so don’t give up. In a month, a year or five years, your life could be totally different.
Take steps to protect your mental health
We all know that exercising and eating healthy foods reduces the risk of physiological conditions, but it is also possible to protect your mental health. Spending time with people you love, devoting time to hobbies and interests, taking time out to relax and unwind, talking about how you feel and getting plenty of rest can all help to reduce anxiety and stress and promote mental wellbeing. Try and identify triggers that contribute to anxiety or periods of feeling low, and cut them out. You might find that taking a break from social media or spending less time with people who put you down make you feel better, for example. Exercise is also a really powerful natural remedy for better mental health. If you don’t love going to the gym, you can still reap the rewards of being active. Going for walks, cycling, swimming, playing golf, jogging, dance classes, spinning and home workouts will all make a positive difference to your health and your mood.
Life is all about going through highs and lows. If you’re experiencing tough times, it’s critical to focus on survival strategies and solutions. Everybody endures difficult periods, and we all face obstacles. There are ways of overcoming hurdles and bouncing back stronger. Spend time with people who make you feel happy, don’t be afraid to open up, use hobbies or activities to channel your emotions and seek expert help.
