Review: Black Panther Long Live The King

Black Panther is the newest film from Marvel Studios a subsidiary of Disney. Whether that puts you off or perks your interest, you should see this film. It hits theaters today so hurry up and get your tickets!

We met the T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), new king of Wakanda, in Captain America: Civil War as he copes with the death of his father. With the crown, T’Challa also inherited the mantle of the Black Panther.

Wakanda (an imaginary country in Africa) is the most technologically advanced culture in the world. Although, most of the world thinks it is a very poor farming third-world country. It was founded around a mountain made almost completely of vibranium, a fictional element also known for being the main component in Captain America’s shield and Black Panther’s suit. Vibranium has led the Wakandan people to serious technological advances including the ability to develop a stealth shield to hide the entire city from the rest of the world.

We meet T’Challa’s ex-girlfriend, Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o) while preparing for the crowning ceremony. Nakia is a Wakandan spy on assignment to stop human traffickers. Rising to the crown is not the easiest ascension for T’Challa. Old enemies rear their ugly heads to complicate the new king’s agenda. Klaw, murder of King T’Chaka (T’Challa’s father), shows up on the radar dealing in stolen vibranium. Most of the world is ignorant of Wakanda’s technology and riches but Klaw is willing to spill the beans…for profit. We at Equality365 don’t want to spill too many of the beans about the movie. You need to see it.

Black Panther characters on equality365.comThe technology of Wakanda is woven magnificently with old African traditions and colors. The art, fabrics look of Africa come through loud and true in even the most high-tech labs in the movie. Whether it be a statue of a panther or the market full of fabrics and intricate baskets, Africa is represented in full color.

Chadwick Boseman is an awesome Black Panther. You must also give high praise to Okoye, the General, played by Danai Gurira. Letitia Wright, who plays T’Challa’s sister Shuri, is smart and sassy. Michael B. Jordan, AKA Erik Killmonger and the Golden Jaguar, is sinister, human and powerful. Ramonda, Queen Mother and wife of T’Chaka, is played by the always amazing Angela Bassett. Forest Whitaker leads the cast as spiritual advisor, Zuri.

The King must lead and protect his people. He must also decide to continue to hide them from the rest of the world or lose the façade and help humanity. The movie is well done. It is a genuine pleasure to watch. You are pulled into this world. How could all of that technology help all of us…?

You will see the Black Panther again in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War. Remember, this is a Marvel Studios film so there are teasers at the end of the film. Yes, there are two. Catch the first one about midway through the credits and don’t miss the second one all the way at the end of the credits.
