Interview with Angela DiMarco
of “Brides to Be”
Earle Dutton: Could you tell me about your character in “Brides to Be”?
Angela DiMarco: My character is Robin. Kris and Lindy contacted me to back in 2014 to work on their short film, “Together Forever”. It was a short film about a day in the life of two women. My character Robin is coming home to her partner Jenna played by Carollani Sandberg. Jenna has found a ring that Robin hid away in a cupboard somewhere. Robin just wanted to wait for the perfect moment. Jenna let’s her know that her know all she needs is Robin. There may never be the perfect moment, with the perfect finances or timing but everything is perfect when they are together. It teaches us to dive in and live in the moment. It is a beautiful film. The film went viral with over two million hits.
This film really touched me because I was raised by two moms. My sister is a lesbian as well. I grew up right here in Seattle. We are a little more progressive here but still there was a lot of homophobia and bigotry. There were a lot of people that are just uneducated about the topic when I was growing up. I grew up constantly having to fight for my mom and my sister to love who they wanted to love.
Kris and Lindy came back and said that everyone really loved the story of Robin and Jenna so let’s make it a feature. “Brides to Be” is the story after she says “I do.” The whole feature is leading up to the day before their wedding. I have never done something like this before. I know people have taken short films and made them into features but I have never done it. It really excited me. We already had this great fan base. We really felt we already knew who these women were. Many of us have felt that feeling of falling in love with someone and just wanting everything to be perfect. Kris and Lindy wanted to add a little twist because they are always challenging us as actors and themselves as filmmakers. They wanted to make this not only a beautiful narrative and story of these two women but they added supernatural sort of thriller elements. I am an uber thriller and horror film geek. It just gets me all excited in all of the places.
ED: What do you like best about working with Kris and Lindy Boustedt?
AD: They make really character driven films that touch on the humanity and vulnerability that most of us have. I think everyone can relate to someone in their films. I am a bisexual woman. I am happily married to my wonderful husband of fifteen years. I remember when I was my little indignant twenty-something self trying to stand up for people to be able to love who they want to love. Those memories really brought me to believe in these films and these ladies.
ED: What did it mean to you to premiere this film at Pridefest?
AD: It was huge! I remember my mom taking my sister and I to Pride in the eighties. It has grown so much since then. It is the only community that I have felt open to and completely un-judged. It means so much to share this story. Our community needs these stories.
